Easy Way To Sew Custom Shower Curtains

Sewing Project:  How To Sew A Shower Curtain

Sewing Friends:

Finding just the right shower curtain for your bathroom is sometimes tough to do.

Why not sew your own custom shower curtain?  If you know how to operate a sewing machine, you can do this.

Shower curtains are so easy to sew, even a beginner can do it.  And you will save a ton of money too!

This is a really fast and inexpensive way to sew your custom shower curtains.

Just follow these easy instructions.

Supplies

First, buy a 70 x 72 inch plastic shower curtain liner at your favorite discount store.

Then, find a twin or double bed sheet that matches your decor.

Preshrink

Now launder the sheet to remove any sizing and preshrink the fabric.

Layout

With the right side down, lay out the clean sheet on the floor and smooth out all the wrinkles.

Place the Top Hems Together

Lay the right side of the liner on top of the sheet with the header of the liner just slightly below (about 1/2 inch)  the top edge of the sheet hem.

Side Hem Allowances For The Shower Curtain

Allow 1 inch of sheet to show on either side of the liner.  That will be for the side hems of the shower curtain.  Draw a line one inch out from the liner if it helps you to remember where to cut the sheet so you don’t accidently cut it off.

Mark The Top Openings For The Shower Curtain

With a fabric marker, mark where the openings of the liner are on the top hem of the sheet.  This will tell you where to put the openings on the curtain.

Bottom Hem Allowance Of The Shower Curtain

Measure down 3 to 4 inches below the liner to allow for a bottom hem and draw a line with the fabric marker.

Check Before You Cut

Double check that the sheet markings are 2 inches wider than the liner and 4 inches longer to allow for 2 side and a bottom hems.

Carefully remove the liner.

Cut Out The Shower Curtain

Cut the sheet on your drawn lines.

Press Hem Allowances

Press 1 inch side hems in.

Press 4 inch bottom hem up.

Stitch Hems

Stitch the 2 side hems and the bottom hem by machine

Sew Openings For Shower Curtain Hooks

Stitch eyelets or vertical buttonholes at the opening markings at the top of the sheet.

Press Well

Hang And Admire Custom Shower Curtain

Now hang your liner and custom shower curtain and stand back and be proud of your handiwork.

Extra Fabric

With the extra fabric left over from the sheet, sew a tie back or cut and sew some bands of fabric across some towels to coordinate with the shower curtain.

You can even glue some of the sheet fabric to a waste basket or a tissue box.

Have fun decorating your designer bath room with your custom shower curtain and bath accessories.

It costs so little, is so easy and sew much fun!  It just makes sense!
