Sewing Projects - Sew A Magic Sash
Sewing ProjectÂ
Hi Sewing Friends:
Impress your friends with this Magic Sash! Sew it while they watch in amazement! It is so much fun to see their reaction. You will love it!
The Magic Sash is cut on grain and is stitched in such a way that it comes out bias. This sash was originated by Edna Bryte Bishop, the grand dame of sewing who was famous for developing The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction.Â
I’m not sure what Mrs. Bishop called this scarf or belt, but I call it a Magic Sash. You will see why when you sew it.Â
Waist sashes are a popular accessory item once again. This sash is a great gift and only takes a few minutes to make. Sew some for your family and friends. Kids and teens love to sew these scarves, too. Just carefully follow the instructions.  It’s easy.  It’s magic!
Fabrics
• You may choose to sew it out of soft or crisp fabrics.
• Use 2, 3 or 4 colors or prints cut various widths if desired
Cutting
• Cut fabric strips either crosswise or lengthwise
• Widths can vary 1†to 4†wide or whatever you want
• Determine the length and width you want the sash to be when it is finished.
Note: When the sash is completed, it will end up being 2/3 of the original length and width of the cut strips. In other words, if you want a 60†long finished sash, you must cut the strips 90†long to start.  If you want the sash to be 4″ wide when it is finished, it must be 6″ wide to start.
How To Sew The Magic
The magic in this sash is in the sewing, so pay close attention to the instructions.
• Stitch the lengthwise or crosswise strips together with 1/4†seams.
• Press the seams open.
• With the sash laying right side up, fold the upper left corner of the sash down into a triangle placing right sides together. The original top edge of the sash is now at the right side edge of the sash.
• Starting at the point at the top right, stitch a 1/4†seam, stopping 1/4†from the base of the triangle.
• With the needle down in the fabric, raise the presser foot.
• Turn and move the top layer of the fabric over to meet the right hand edge of the underneath layer of fabric
• Lower the presser foot.
• Continue stitching a 1/4†seam, stitching down to the end of the fabric and bringing the top layer over to the right edge as you sew. This will look like a twisted mess, but it is right. Keep going!
• When the seam is completed, turn the fabric right side out. This is a WOW moment!! The sash strips spiral around the sash and the sash is now bias!
• Lay the sash out flat and press with the grain.
• Trim the ends to meet and make even.
• Turn 1/4†seam allowance to the inside at the end.
• Fuse or slipstitch edges together to complete the sash.
Enjoy your Magic Sash!
