How To Get Rid Of The “Bulky” Look In Your Sewing Projects
Sewing Technique
Sewing Friends:
In sewing a garment, often it is the bulky seams that shout out, “Look! I made this myself!”  The  ”homemade” look is not what we want.  So many times when we follow the sewing pattern guidesheet instructions, the “homemade” look is what we get.
You know, I believe when we sew that we are all designers! There is no reason why we can’t have a couture quality garment. One way to begin to get a better quality look in all our sewing projects is by reducing bulk in our seams.ÂÂ
The most obvious place to start is our hems.
Hems (which are really like facings) and facing seam allowances should be trimmed to less than the outer garment seam allowance.
This is often called grading or staggering the seams and reduces bulk.ÂÂ
The rule in sewing is . . .
Anytime a seam lays over itself or one seam allowance lays on top of another seam allowance, the seam allowance that is on the underside is trimmed to less than the outer one.ÂÂ
Sometimes we need to be reminded of some old fashioned basics in sewing.
For a good review on how to sew a hem, see
http://www.sewing.org/files/guidelines/11_130_simple_hems.pdf
Notice in the photo that the hem seam allowance has been trimmed up to and including the fold line of the hem.
Remember to follow the sewing rule to reduce bulk in all your sewing projects and you will see a big difference in your garments.
