Sewing Video - Sewing Technique - Fly Front Zipper - Fitting Pants

Hi Sewing Friends:

I am so delighted when I find a really good sewing technique to help you achieve sewing success.  Sometimes sewing techniques are better seen instead of read.  I don’t have a video camera to show you how to do some of the techniques that you want.  Maybe that will come someday.  But, for now, if I find a video that I think is good, I will share it with you.

Here is a sewing video by Sandra Betzina that you need to keep and use in sewing your pants.  It is an Easy, Flat Fly-Front Zipper.  Even beginners can sew this professional looking fly front zipper.

Fly front zippers are really easy to install if you know the right technique.  I have been using the sewing technique in this video for a long time and it is my favorite.  Sandra Betzina does a great job in demonstrating how it is done.

Ignore the pattern instructions and use this simplified version for “ready-to-wear” results. — with Sandra Betzina

Get detailed written instructions in Sandra’s book, “Power Sewing Step by Step”  This is a “must have” in your sewing library.

To do this technique, make sure that you check your sewing pattern to ensure that the existing extension is 1-3/8 inches wide and 8 inches long.

You can add a fly front to a sewing pattern for pants or skirts. Simply add the 1-3/8 inch x 8 inch extension.  This extension is added to both right and left sides.  Remember to add the 1-3/8 inches from the center front seam line not the cutting line.

Click the link and download the video.  Enjoy and learn how to sew an easy, flat fly-front zipper.  You will be amazed at just how easy it is.

Here is an extra sewing tip for you.

Before you make the last row of stitching that shows on the outside of the fly front, add a strip of paper backed fusible tape to the zipper tape and fuse the zipper extension in place to help keep it from shifting when you topstitch.  This eliminates the need to pin and holds everything securely.  Try it!  It just makes sense!
