Sewing Tip - Keep Fabric Scraps Handy When You Shop

Sewing Tip

Hi Sewing Friends:

Sometimes I just assume you know some of the tips that I use so often and then someone reminds me that isn’t necessarily so.

That happened today.  And so, I will share with you another little sewing tip that I hope will help you when you go shopping for the perfect buttons for your new outfit.

I was looking for some buttons for a shirt I’m making for a sewing class I will be teaching soon.  While I was trying to choose from the selection of buttons on the display rack, a young woman came up to me and said, “What a great idea!  Why didn’t I think of that?

The “great idea” was a scrap of my shirt fabric with a slit cut in the center of it so that I could put the button through the slit and see how it would look on the garment without removing the button from the card.  This works great and gives me a really good idea of how the button will look on the finished garment.

Whenever I go shopping, my purse is usually full of fabric scraps to match with something or other.  Perhaps I need a top for a bottom or vice versa, or a button or a trim for a home dec project or a coordinate to complete a look.

I have so many scraps that I started carrying them in small plastic bags.  Each scrap is pinned to a post-it note with what the project is and what I need to go with it.  I have a bag for my personal projects and another bag for my class projects where I also tuck in my sales receipts so I can track my expenses.

Retaining color and shades of a color is nearly impossible, so whether you are looking for something in the fabric store or want to add a ready to wear piece to your home made outfit, take along those fabric scraps for a perfect match.

Perhaps you can eliminate those mismatched items that don’t go with anything else.  If you currently have a lot of things like that and you really like them, put them in a bag and take them to the store with you to help find whatever you need to complete the outfit. Of course, if you don’t like them, give them away right now.

That will free up space for your coordinated, well matched outfits that you are going to finish as soon as possible . . . right?  Maybe all these sewing tips will inspire you.

It just makes sense!

To Your Sewing Success,

Marian
