Sewing Rule - Sewing Two Layers Together
Sewing Rule
Hi Sewing Friends:
There are times when you are sewing that you need to remember some basic sewing rules. Sewing pattern guidesheets don’t always have the best instructions for you to achieve sewing success in your sewing project.
Remember to use your sewing rules.
A sewing rule to remember is, “Never sew more than 2 layers together at one time!”
Now, think about that!
When you try to sew 3 or 4 loose layers together like a sandwich, something is bound to slide out of place.
So, to prevent that, sew 2 layers together. They are now together and considered to be one layer. Then add another layer to that. Again you are sewing 2 layers to make them become one. And so, it goes.
Add the new layer to the bottom so you can see where you stitched the first two together and sew on top of the original stitching.
Are some light bulbs coming on? Are you realizing why some of your sewing projects never come out the way you thought you sewed them? Did you have more than 2 unattached layers together?
Join two, make them one, join another, make them one, join another, make them one, etc. That way, nothing can slide anywhere! Got it?
You need to follow this technique when putting a collar together and joining it to the garment and attaching the facing. That’s four layers - the garment neckline, the two layers of collar and the facing. Don’t try to put this all together at once.
Remember to use it when you sew your zippers, too. Sew the zipper tape to the seam allowance, then sew that to the garment.
Try this technique to achieve greater sewing success
It just makes sense.
