Kids Sewing Project - Barbecue Apron For Dad

Kids Sewing Project

Hi Sewing Friends:

My 13 year old grandson, Alex is here for two weeks on his summer vacation.  What a busy time!

Papa has been a Saint trying to keep Alex occupied while I write or sew or teach or cook (Alex eats a lot and often!) or do laundry or attempt to keep the house a little orderly.

Of course, Alex wanted to sew.  He hadn’t gotten his Dad a Father’s Day gift, so he wanted to make something special for him while he was here.  We always do a little sewing when he comes.  He loves it.  But, this time, he wanted to do it by himself because now, he reminded me, he is a teenager!

This is quite a feat for Alex since he is bipolar, ADHD, and suffers from a many
other disorders.  However, he was able to concentrate long enough to complete
an apron.  It was awesome to watch him as he intently worked on his sewing project.

Alex chose the fabric to make a barbecue apron for Dad.  It was a print with playing cards and dice since Dad likes to play cards.  I helped him with the layout, but he cut it out and stitched it.  He struggled to sew straight, so we set the stitch to zigzag so he could catch the fabric somewhere.  That worked!

I did manage the iron for him since the last time, it somehow melted a couple of iron prints into my sewing room carpet.  Oops!

The carpet will be replaced some day, but the memory of seeing the pride in that boy’s face when he held up his special gift for his Dad will be with me forever.

We can’t wait til Dad comes and tries on his apron made with love by Alex.

Here is Alex modeling his creation:

Even ”special needs” kids can sew.  Help them express their creativity.  It doesn’t have to be perfect.  Teach them some “safety rules” and let them have fun.  They don’t even need to follow a pattern.  Just give them some fabric and let them “create” whatever they want.  You may be surprised.  And, I am certain you will enjoy it, too!

It just makes sense!

To Your Sewing Success,

Marian

PS:  Don’t tell Dad!  It is a surprise!
