Fashion Trends To Sew for Spring 2008
Sewing Fashion Trends
Sewing Friends:
High heeled pumps, pencil slim skirt with wide cinched belt and puffy sleeved feminine blouse with a soft bow at the neck, a classic fitted jacket, hat and bag - - -the 2008 fashion trend or what I wore for my first job interview in the 50’s? The only thing missing is the white gloves!
I got some flyers in the mail that say the must-have trends for the season ahead are:
- A Signature Jacket (slightly fitted, closer to the body)
- Embellished Tee - again slightly shaped
- Metallic embellishments especially gun metal gray
- A Chic Wrap
- Perfect Pants
- Novelty bulky knit sweater
- Fashion Denim
- A Touch of Red
- Shades of Grey
- Navy paired with black
- A Wide Belt ÂÂ
- Pencil Slim Skirt
These clothes have a more “grown up”, more structured look they say. I say, ”Thank goodness!”ÂÂ
So, what are you planning to sew? How about a jacket, skirt, tee or pants?  Wraps are so easy. You have to do a wrap for the holidays.  And belts are a cinch! Copy what you see in ready-to-wear.
Have you noticed all the exposed zippers lately? You can do that!ÂÂ
Plan out your wardrobe in your favorite colors. All of us can wear these things and they can have some shaping without being too fitted.
Everything old is new again. Vintage and retro reign. That means that generally the clothing is more fitted and feminine. I wonder how long it will last.ÂÂ
Better take off a few pounds to get into some of these styles. That roll around the middle doesn’t look good bulging over a wide belt. So make your belt a little looser and maybe not as wide if you don’t have the body for it.
The teen and college kids in my sewing classes want to make dresses and straight skirts like I wore in the 50’s. They are covering up the belly buttons and want longer skirts and higher waists. I love it.ÂÂ
Of course, they are exposing more cleavage than we ever did, but it is fun to see them get excited about dresses. I have fond memories of these styles with the full skirts and loved to go dancing in them.
At 70, I am beyond the cinched waist “Grace Kelly/Doris Day” look and leave that to be enjoyed by the young. However, I still think the pencil slim straight skirt and slightly fitted jacket are classics that look good on everyone.ÂÂ
I will do an outfit soon out of silk dupioni. I will use my “Classy Designer Straight Skirt” and one of my favorite simple jackets to sew an elegant suit that I can wear for any special occasion.ÂÂ
Recently, I saw a lined pencil slim skirt with a faced waistline, center back zipper, back slit and a band of grosgrain ribbon just above the hemline for $195. Wow! How much money we can save when we sew! And, we can make it fit our unique bodies.ÂÂ
That’s what I love about sewing. You can make almost anything you want, in whatever color or fabric you want and you know it is going to fit and not cost you a fortune. Get your fit and sew some fashion trends that never go out of style.
It just makes sense!
