Sewing Projects - Table Runners
Sewing Projects
Sewing Friends:
I love table runners. They are fun and easy to make and really dress up your table, mantle, server, and can even hang on your wall. They add a festive look to a very plain table. Think about giving a table runner as a gift to your favorite hostess.ÂÂ
Table runners are great sewing projects. They are a good place to try out sewing or quilting techniques as well as any creative or artistic idea you might have. Many table runners are no-sew projects as well. Anyone can make a table runner.
I also use items that weren’t meant to be table runners on my table like scarves or stoles and handwoven fabrics or special silks that I have collected from far away places. You are only limited by your imagination.
One of my students asked me for ideas for table runners. My mind was immediately flooded with so many suggestions. The main thing is that you go with something that appeals to you and fits in with your style and home decor.
Most table runners are rectangular, but they don’t have to have straight edges. Try sewing a scalloped edge or pointed edge or just a little wavy edge or a little ruffled edge. Whatever you can imagine, try it! It is just a bit of fabric and some thread. Create your own design.
You don’t have to buy a pattern. There are lots of free instructions on the internet on how to sew a table runner.  Even if you don’t like the design of some of the following table runners, check out the sewing instructions for tidbits of good information that will help you to achieve sewing success and make your table runner unique.ÂÂ
Check out this list of table runners. Hopefully, you will find one that appeals to you and will inspire you to make your own table runners.ÂÂ

NOTE: I love Mary’s handy hint:
“Here is a handy little hint. Machine washing can turn your tassels into a tangled mess. Instead of sewing them to the runner, sew a small shirt button on the wrong side near the point. Slip the loop of the tassel over the button and no one will be the wiser. Next time it goes in the washing machine, slip the tassels off and wash as usual. Your tassels will be just like new when you put them back on.”

Another idea I like is to pull threads and make one inch fringe all around the fabric. This is especially nice on more loosely woven linen or handwoven fabrics.   I suggest that you stitch a small zigzag about 1 inch from the edges to help keep the fabric from fraying further. Then, just pull the threads out up to the stitching.ÂÂ
So, you see, there are a lot of ideas out there for you. Sew some table runners. It just makes sense!
